We’re joining the fight against our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers – cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

On May 4th – May 8th our PE teachers will be doing a jump rope unit. These events or units are held at schools nationwide and not only help students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health, but they also raise funds to support vital heart and stroke research as well as educational programs.

The American Heart Association is dedicated to helping people live longer, healthier lives. The money we raise helps people in our community learn how to prevent heart disease and stroke and also helps our local patient care. Our school will qualify for gift certificates for free physical education equipment based on the amount we raise, and students will qualify for individual thank-you gifts based on the donations they collect.

Family and friends can support your child’s participation by making contributions. However, we ask that children not go door-to door or ask strangers for donations. If your child receives any cash donations, please convert those to a check before turning in the collection envelope. All checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association. The deadline for your student’s collection envelope to be turned in is May 1st!

Also, don’t forget to ask your child’s donors if their employers have matching gift programs. This is an easy way to increase the donations your child collects. To find out which companies will match donations to the American Heart Association, please visit www.matchinggifts.com/aha. All matching gift forms should include your child’s name and school name so the donations can be properly designated.

Jump Rope For Heart is a fun program that helps our children understand the importance of community service and physical activity while helping to save lives. And this year will be special….we’ll be celebrating 30th anniversary of Jump Rope for Heart. Our efforts truly make a difference! Please sign the Permission Slip at the bottom and return it to: Mr. Danzy (grades 1 – 3) & Mr. McGovern (grades 4 – 6) by Friday, April 24th or ASAP. Once your child’s permission slip has been filled out, he or she will get a pledge form.

Sinceerely,
Mr. Danzy and Mr. McGovern

*

January - Student of the Month ~ EARNERS

First grade earner this month is Marlon in Mrs Sokaris class. We will make sure the supplies get plenty of use.

Our FitnessGram assessment started today. All classes will have 3 days to complete four test items which consist of muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. The first day of class will be the endurance (PACER) assessment. The next two classes will encompass curl-ups, push-ups and sit & reach (flexibility).

Today we had 9 classes complete the PACER assessment. We have some really fantastic endurance runners! Once all classes have completed the FitnessGram assessment, I will try and post the top three students in each category.

Teach To Educate

I read an article titled “No one fails in Room 208” in Sunday’s Times Union. The article was inspiring and shined a light on the profession that I choose for similar reasons. And those reasons are to help students reach their potential and make each student feel accepted. In my tenure as a physical education teacher, I have gained a lot of insight on the possibilities of my students in my care. Students want structure and lessons that are fun that relate to their everyday lives. In physical education students that are made aware of the importance of living a healthy and fit life will gain a greater appreciation for the lessons that stress muscle growth, movement skills, endurance, heart rate, flexibility and sport skills.

Al Green and Andreya Drury both English teachers were highlighted by staff writer Leigh Hornbeck for this article. The article starts like this “no one is allowed to fail inside classroom 208.” After reading the first paragraph I was determined to finish the article. I am glad I did. Mr. Green and Ms. Drury co-teach their 7th and 8th grade English classes. Their classes are small with 15 students which allow them to concentrate on the individual needs of each student. Students in Mr. Green and Ms. Drury class are students “who have low scores on the state test or have struggled in regular English classes.” In Room 208 the “goal is to make up for lost time.”

Mr. Green and Ms. Drury classes consist of students who “passed, but barely or who have spent grade school just sliding by in the back of the classroom.” Mr. Green was quoted in the article making the profound statement “by fourth grade, kids start thinking of themselves as bad writers and readers.” These two dynamic teachers understanding the situation at hand have designed their classroom to help build the self-confidence of the students, so that they can “score higher on the state test.” One important note to mention is that the students in Room 208 are not special need students “but lack the confidence or the motivation to learn.” In Room 208 the average mandated English test score increased by 15 points after a year in Mr. Green and Ms. Drury class.

Mr. Green and Ms. Drury classroom design and teaching methods has caught my mention as well. The author points out that the students sit in a horseshoe so that a student who nods off will be easily detected. Technology is a focus in Room 208. Each student has a computer and some lessons pertain to searching on the YouTube site to find ideas for a reading assignment. Ms. Drury also mentioned that “relating lessons to the students’ lives is a big part of what makes learning possible.” I agree. Students who can relate to the material being taught will likely grasp the content with greater success. Although I do not have any empirical data to support my stance at the moment, I do think it has relevance.

The success in the classroom has affected the parents of the students in Room 208. One parent mentioned that her daughter “started making the honor roll.” The parent went on to say that her daughter “likes to read now and she will ask for extra help on her own.” I will end with this, one of the students scored high enough on the state test that would have allowed her to move on to a larger class but the student chose to stay. This student gave Mr. Green and Ms. Drury the greatest compliment any student could give a teacher; she said “when I come in this room it feels like home.”

Mr. Green and Ms. Drury teach at Acadia Middle School in the Shenendehowa School District.

What are your thoughts about teachers who make a difference? Do you know of any? please share

September - Student of the Month ~ Earners!!!

View Album
Get your own

The 1st Grade earner this month is Demonya in Mrs. Smith class. Demonya has demonstrated the ability to stay on task, participate at a high level and able to work well with others. Demonya is a pleasure to have in physical education class. Keep up the great work. When asked, what he like most about school, Demonya responded with saying "spelling." Demonya also explained that gym (physical education) was his favorite subject. We might have a budding physical education teacher in our mist.

The 2nd Grade earner this month is Terryona in Ms. Nies class. Terryona is a pleasure to have in class. She is able to stay on task when others are sometimes not. Terryona’s ability to focus and maintain her personal space is wonderful. Terryona participates at a high level and is determined to accomplish a task that she might have trouble with. Terryona is a great example for the students in her class and brightens up the room with her smile. When Terryona was asked, what she wants to do when she grows up she responded by saying "a gym teacher." Terryona's favorite subject is Math and she explained that she is good at Science. Terryona is well on her way at becoming whatever she dreams.

The 3rd Grade earner this month is Haroon in Mrs. Corazzini class. Haroon is a kind and very active student. He cooperates well with his fellow students and is often heard saying positive words to his classmates. Haroon brings a lot of energy in physical education class and never seems to slow down. The example that Haroon sets is often contagious with his peers in class. Haroon's eyes are always focused on the teacher and never needs directions repeated. When asked what is your favorite activity or sport, Haroon responded with "soccer." Haroon likes reading Pokemon books. Haroon's favorite place to visit is Pakinstan. Haroon mentioned someday he wants to "be a gym teacher." Haroon will make a wonderful physical education teacher.

FitnessGram

Now that we have completed the first month of school I am looking forward to helping students throughout the year gain strength, skills and sport & health knowledge. In September, students have been focusing on spacial awareness, locomotor skills and foot-eye coordination activities. Ask your child where biceps, triceps and quadriceps are located and how many muscles are located at each.

The PE department has started the FitnessGram program. Ask your child(ren) about it. In PE class we have been using the FitnessGram program as a warmup activity to get the students familiar with it. The actual assessment will take place (tentatively) in late October. I hope to provide the top scores of each grade level on this site.

Is resistance training beneficial for youth?

By: Kenneth B. Danzy - Physical Education Teacher, basketball coach of Albany High School & Umoja T.W.O.

The position statement by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) points out that resistance training will be beneficial to youth when it is properly designed and supervised as well as improve the participant’s psychosocial well-being. According to Brandon (2004) “pre-puberty, both boys and girls have similar strength, and at this age children have developing neuromuscular systems” (P. 57). This will be critical in designing a resistance training program for youth at this stage of their lives. Educating youth about the “big muscle-group, free-weight and bodyweight movements with light loads” will prepare participants on the effects of weight training in relation to their bodies. Another author Grantham (2004) points to the evidence that suggests “strength increases in line with the development of the nervous system, which is of primary importance in the exertion and development of muscular strength” (P. 66). As far as enhancing the motor fitness skills in youth 3 determinants of strength gains are closely associated with improved motor-skill coordination, increased motor-unit activation and neurological adaptations.

Brandon (2004) goes on to say “during the pre-puberty years, particular attention should be paid to posture and stability, since children need good strength in the trunk muscles to support the body correctly” (P. 58). Young athletes in the pre-puberty stage will benefit from the power clean, bench press, press-ups and squats without any added weight so the focus can be on technique, coordination and stability at performing the skill.

Resistance training as suggested by the NSCA, does improve strength in children. As mentioned by Brandon (2004) “strength training from puberty onwards would still be highly beneficial for boys… [because it] provides a great window of opportunity for them to develop strength… [since] the high testosterone levels” are present during this time (P. 59). Muscle hypertrophy will be enhanced in boys during the puberty stage because of the large increase of testosterone. Grantham (2004) makes the profound claim that:

“indirect evidence has shown that an increase in strength can improve specific
activities, such as vertical jump, swim speed and running speed and , if you
look at the investment most high-performance teams are now making in
strength training for their performers, I would suggest that resistance
training is an extremely effective tool for improving athletic performance”
(P. 67).

With resistance training implemented in a youth program the participants will develop a healthy image of one’s self. The improvements in strength and physique will have a positive effect on the participant’s mental health psyche. In closing the information presented by the NSCA is valuable to any coach working with young children. The information would guild your philosophy in regards to weight training and the framework on how it should be carried out.

Below is an example of a resistance program for 10 year olds presented to me by Alan Stein CCS, CSCS. Mr. Stein has many videos on strength training and is nationally known as a strength and conditioning coach/trainer. Here is a sample: Push-ups; Pull-ups; Dips; Abs/low back; DB shoulder press; Seated row; Upright row; Walking lunge; Hamstring curl; Step ups; Hip abduction. “Do one set of each, with a resistance that they can perform 15 reps on their own, but is still challenging” with no more than two days a week for 30-40 minutes each time. Also include dynamic flexibility (DF) for sport specific motor movement. A. Stein (personal communication, July, 24, 2008). Examples of DF are: high knee skip; high knee run; butt kick; carioca; lateral shuffle; walking lunge; backward run; side to side kick; Spiderman; foot-fire one leg explosion; Frankenstein, etc. .

An athlete who has the ability to display dynamic flexibility according to Appleton (2008) is able to signal the “muscles to bring a limb through its full range of motion in the joints” (P. 1). It is important to attain and maintain flexibility because it will give the athlete a greater opportunity to perform better in competition and practice. The athlete who is able to move his or her body through degrees of motion at a joint or a series of joints will gain better outcomes. This also occurs during a workout session. The ability to maintain flexibility after a workout will increase muscle function and decrease muscle fatigue. Flexibility is crucial when the muscle shortens due to a workout with weights. After an intense workout the muscle(s) fill up with lactic acid which gives it the bulging (pumped) look and feel. This will decrease the range of motion in that area of the body. It is important to stretch the muscle(s) to help discard the lactic acid build up in the muscle. Thereby maintaining and/or increasing the range of motion in that area of the body. Now the athlete is ready for battle with a strong and flexible body.

Work Cited

Position Statement youth resistance training. (n.d.) The main point of the article focused on obesity and health insurance contributions. Alabama's State Employees' Insurance Board put its' 37,527 state workers on notice by implementing a weight requirement. This new policy ensures that, if state workers exceed the benchmark of a body mass index 35 or higher it will cost them $25.00 a month for health insurance. "Alabama will be the first state to charge overweight state workers."

Alabama which ranks as one of the highest in national obesity rankings "is cracking down on state workers who are too fat." State workers have until January 2010 to slim down, and avoid the $25.00 insurance fee.

Do you feel its a good policy? Yes, it's another school year which gives you the opportunity to improve on your potential to become physically educated students. As most of you know TOAST has been relocated at (original) Albany High School, although we are at a different building, I am sure we will make it feel like home. I can not wait to see all of you and get the new school year started with a bang!

In closing, as always come prepared with sneakers, comfortable clothing and a smile! I will be looking for our "student(s) of the month" for September. I will post the requirements for that honor soon. Until then, get your sleep (10 hours), exercise (15 minutes) and proper nutrition (fruits & vegetables).
